Das Ziel des Teilprojekts ist die Entwicklung einer transnationalen Panelstudie zur Untersuchung sozialer Ungleichheit im Kontext von Transnationalität. Damit widmet sich das Projekt einer Problemstellung, die derzeit zwar immer größere Aufmerksamkeit gewinnt, für deren näheres Verständnis bislang allerdings Konzepte und konkrete Fragestellungen fehlen. Es bedarf dazu eines Untersuchungsdesigns, das in der Lage ist, Ungleichheit in transnationalen Kontexten zu erforschen.

Transnationalität bezeichnet hier ein Heterogenitätsmerkmal, das zur Genese und Reproduktion sozialer Ungleichheiten beiträgt. Dieses Merkmal wird definiert durch grenzübergreifende und relativ kontinuierliche soziale und symbolische Bindungen und Praktiken von Personen und Haushalten. Dadurch entstehen Ungleichheitsprozesse an verschiedenen Orten transnationaler Sozialräume, die miteinander im Zusammenhang stehen. Um zu verstehen, wie dieser Zusammenhang zustande kommt, identifiziert das Projekt die zugrunde liegenden Mechanismen.

Zur empirischen Untersuchung dieser Fragestellung ist ein innovatives Forschungsdesign zentral. Das Vorgehen zeichnet sich durch ein Mixed Methods Design und Multi-sited Research aus. Es verbindet die Auswertung existierender Paneldaten mit transnational angelegten qualitativen und quantitativen Längschnitt-Erhebungen. In seiner ersten Phase wird das Teilprojekt die Panelstudie vorbereiten, die in den Folgephasen umgesetzt wird. Diese Phase ist so vor allem der Entwicklung von Inhalten, Fragestellungen und Methoden gewidmet. Diese sollen auch in der Lage sein, dem grenzübergreifenden Charakter des Phänomens Rechnung zu tragen und werden an mehreren Orten transnationaler Sozialräume zum Einsatz kommen. Zunächst steht der Bezugsraum Deutschland-Türkei im Vordergrund.
