1st day of the conference: opening ceremony

Thursday, September 20th, 2012, Bielefeld, Ravensberger Spinnerei, Großer Saal

On September 20th, 2012, the opening conference will be be started by a ceremonial evening event. At first, lectures by Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Franz-Xaver Kaufmann and Prof. Dr. Martin Diewald will provide an introduction to the broad range of topics of CRC 882. Then a social-political panel will discuss the question of how much inequality our society needs on the one hand and how much can tolerate on the other. Participants in the panel will be Dr. Norbert Blüm, Dr. Antje Vollmer, Dr. Dr. h. c. Stefan Hradil and Prof. Dr. Ulrike Detmers. Petra Pinzler will act as host.

2nd day of the conference: Scientific conference

Friday, September 21st, 2012, Bielefeld, Ravensberger Spinnerei

The scientific conference of September 21st, 2012 will start with a keynote address by Prof. Dr. Göran Therborn (University of Cambridge) on “Modernity and the Discovery of (In)Equality”. Then, by three parallel workshop streams, fifteen projects of CRC 882 will present first results of their research programmes and discuss them with international researchers.


The crucial question of the genesis of inequality will be tackled interdisciplinarily: Apart from sociological projects, both politological, economics-related and education-scientific as well as social-anthropological, health-scientific and education-scientific studies will be presented and commented on during the workshops. Based on the results achieved at the workshops, possible prospects of the future of the research on inequality will then be presented in the context of the final panel discussion.
