Opening Conference of SFB 882 - 1st Day of the Conference

Back to program2nd day of the conference

1st Day of the Conference: Opening Ceremony (in German)

Thursday, September 20th, 2012,
Bielefeld, Ravensberger Spinnerei, Großer Saal

Despite or precisely of the idea of treating all humans as equals, a variety of kinds of social inequality is discussed in our society: differences regarding income and power, inequal treatment of women and men, or educational inequalities between ethnically dominating and minority groups are only a few examples which are discussed again and again. Now, if we assume that such inequalities are inseparably connected to the variety and difference between humans, from the social-political and scientific point of view there arise the following questions:

  • How do social inequalities develop and how are they legitimated by society?

  • In which way is the variety of individuals and groups made a topic of discussion and how does it become relevant for inequalities?

  • In how far are reliable statements on social inequalities possible at all?

  • Finally but not least, in view of social cohesion, there is the question about the limits of the structure of social inequality: How much inequality can be tolerated by our society?
