Associate Professor and Associate Chair in the Sociology Department at the University of Toronto stays with SFB 882 as a visiting scholar from Dec. 9th to Dec. 20th 2013. Her current research focuses on citizenship and constructions of national belonging in debates on immigrant integration.
Throughout her work, she unpacks the ways in which the problematic of immigrant integration is defined in the intersections of gender, religion, ethnicity and national origin, often by looking at debates regarding Muslim immigrants in Europe and Canada. She has critically analyzed various media and political debates, including those focused on the murder of Theo van Gogh in the Netherlands, on honour killing in Europe and Canada, and on the headscarf in Europe and North-America.
During her visit, Prof. Korteweg will give a talk on “Headscarf Debates in Europe: Conflict of Belonging in National Narratives” in the SFB Colloquium on Dec. 11th 2013.
